Drugs seized in Selangor enough for entire population, says top cop

SHAH ALAM: The drugs seized by Selangor police this year is now enough to cater to drug users numbering more than the entire population of the state, the state’s top cop says. Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that between January and October this year, police in the state seized drugs worth about RM306.31mil.

“There are around 7.2 million people in Selangor and the drugs would have been enough to fuel 7.4 million users.

“At the same time we have also successfully dismantled 29 drug distribution syndicates, including four cases of illegal drug laboratories in Selangor,” he said during a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday.

Statistics show that the top three narcotics seized were syabu (2.2 tonnes), ganja (408kg) and heroin (169kg).

Comm Hussein said the seized drugs was proof that police were proactive in the ongoing war against drugs.

“It is also proven with the successful arrest of 18,911 suspects between January and October this year. From that number, a total of 609 drug pushers have been investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which if found guilty, would lead to either the death penalty or life imprisonment with 15 lashes of the rotan.

“In the last five years, 24 people have been sentenced to death under Section 39B,” he said.

Comm Hussein also thanked the public for providing valuable information that led to successful drug busts in the state.

Yesterday, Selangor police handed over nearly two tonnes of seized narcotics worth RM42.26mil to Cenviro Sdn Bhd for disposal purposes at its plant in Port Dickson.

The drugs were linked to 9,142 cases between 2016 and 2023 which have completed all legal processes.

In an unrelated matter, Comm Hussein said police had completed their investigation paper on the two suspects linked to the hacking of a fast-food restaurant’s digital menu screen in Kuala Langat.

“The investigation has been completed and we will refer it to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office with the suggestion of charging them,” he said.

On Oct 31, a report from a manager of a fast-food restaurant in Kuala Langat was lodged after the outlet’s digital menu was hacked.

The hacked screen displayed images of food with blood, bombs, and bullets, as well as the words “Proud Sponsors of Israeli Terrorism” written across it.
