Man caught ferrying construction workers in bus despite only having motorcycle licence

KAJANG: A man was found ferrying 40 construction workers in a tour bus despite only having a motorcycle license.

The 22-year-old man was stopped by Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel during a special joint operation on Wednesday (Nov 8) night.

A total of 106 personnel from JPJ, Police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), Immigration Department (JIM), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Department of the Environment (JAS) were involved in the operation at the Sungai Ramal Toll Plaza (East).

The bus driver claimed he was on his way to take the passengers from his workplace in Serdang to their hostel in Kajang when the vehicle was detained by the authorities in the operation.

"Usually my brother takes the bus, I am replacing him because he had an event to attend tonight. I was paid RM30 to take the bus this time (one trip)," he told reporters after he was stopped.

The bus was later seized by the JPJ under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Selangor JPJ director Azrin Borhan said a total of 5,223 vehicles were checked during the operation which started at 8pm on Wednesday.

"Out of that number, 281 vehicles were issued with 531 notices for various offenses issued, while four vehicles were confiscated including the bus that was driven without a license.

"The most common offences were technical, which includes illegal modifications," he said, adding that the police also issued 55 summonses for various offences.

Azrin said five motorists were also detained for testing positive for drugs while 42 foreigners were also detained for immigration offences.
