KUALA PILAH: A 46-year-old man has been jailed two years after pleading guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his wife.
Ismail Ibrahim, a livestock farmer, did not contest the charge after it was read to him before Magistrate Saiful Sayoti in court here on Friday (Nov 10).
He was charged with committing the offence against his 47-year-old wife, a teacher, at around 9.10pm on Tuesday (Nov 7) near a fast food restaurant in Gemencheh.
Ismail was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment for up to a year or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, if found guilty.
The charge was read together with Section 326A of the same legislation for causing hurt to a spouse, which provides for a jail term which may extend to twice the maximum penalty under Section 323.
According to the facts of the case, Ismail's wife was waiting for the bus to return to her hometown in Terengganu when the accused approached her.
They got into an argument and Ismail started strangling the victim.
He also hit her head several times against the wall and punched her in the face.
There were several witnesses to the attack.
The victim was then taken to the Gemencheh health clinic where she received two stitches for a forehead injury, among other treatments.
Muhammad Amirul Noor Hashimi prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
