Sabah hosts the 14th Southeast Asia Biosphere Reserves Network Program meeting

KOTA KINABALU: A collaborative initiative has been launched to preserve cultural heritage and the environment in Sabah and other Southeast Asian nations.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew (pic) said the "Southeast Asia Biosphere Reserves Network Program", or SeaBRnet, is an initiative that safeguards common heritage.

She said among them is the conservation of designated biosphere reserves.

“We are committed to preserving the balance between human development and nature in these invaluable regions,” she said on Monday (Nov 13) when she officiated the 14th SeaBRnet meeting.

Liew said SeaBRnet wishes to promote cultural exchange among Southeast Asian nations by understanding and appreciating each other's traditions. This will allow member countries to safeguard their cultural heritages and promote harmony and mutual respect.

“Responsible tourism is another core element of SeaBRnet. We will encourage tourism practices that respect the environment and the cultures of our host communities,” she said, adding that this approach protects natural wonders and benefits local economies.

Liew said collaboration would be the foundation of their efforts to address environmental and cultural challenges in the region.

She said that SeaBRnet recognises the role of youth and local communities in conservation and cultural preservation activities, and it encourages their participation.

“The success of SeaBRnet depends on the collective efforts of all participants. Our shared goals are to preserve our environment, foster cultural understanding, and promote sustainable regional development,” said Liew.

“Together, we have the power to protect and celebrate Southeast Asia's splendour for generations to come. Let us work hand in hand toward a future where our biosphere reserves stand as beacons of sustainability and cultural richness,” she said.

Like any other developing region, conservation constantly clashes with socio-economic development.

“Like many other regions, we are consistently trying our best to contribute to the global movement to achieve 30% of terrestrial and 30% of marine areas conserved by 2030,” she added.
