KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood victims in Kedah continues to rise while floods in Perak improve on Wednesday (Nov 15).
In Kedah, the total number of flood victims increased to 210 from 68 families tonight compared with 107 victims from 34 families on Wednesday morning.
The Kedah Civil Defence Force Disaster Management secretariat head, Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said two temporary relief centres (PPS) were opened in Kota Setar district.
"The two PPS are at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Titi Gajah and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Alor Merah with 85 and 94 additional victims respectively as at 8pm tonight (Nov 15) following a heavy downpour in the evening.
"Apart from that, another PPS was opened in Kota Setar at SK Taman Aman at 5pm but the number of victims housed is being enumerated," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
The centre was opened on Monday following threre hours of heavy rain which flooded several areas among them were Kampung Lahar, Kampung Paya Tok Keong, Kampung Paya Tok Teh and Kampung Biak in the district.
It was a different situation in Perak where flood victims in three districts on Wednesday night continued to fall to 187 people from 54 families compared to 217 people from 62 families this morning with two PPS closed late in the afternoon.
The Perak State Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a statement said the Chikus Multipurpose Hall PPS was closed at 6.30pm while the Sri Kinta Public Hall PPS was closed at 7pm on Tuesday (Nov 14) night.
Four PPS were still operating, namely the Shooting Range Multipurpose Hall PPS in Hilir Perak with 98 people from 29 families sheltering in the PPS.
"In Kerian, 23 people from four families are still at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Changkat Lobak PPS, while the number of flood victims at SK Alor Pongsu PPS also remains at 57 people from 19 families," according to the statement.
The secretariat said in Kinta district, nine people from two families are still in Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Meru 2A PPS. - Bernama
