Gov’t is reviewing Protected Areas and Protected Places Act, says Home Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959, known as Act 298, is being reviewed, and the government is deciding whether or not to make amendments, says the Home Minister.

Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Act 298 had not been reviewed since 1959, and the study was to determine the necessary improvements on several elements, such as strengthening existing punishment.

“Secondly, powers (under Act 298) will include various enforcement agencies, not only the police,” Saifuddin told reporters at an event at the Leo Moggie Auditorium in TNB Platinum Convention Centre on Thursday (Nov 16).

Saifuddin also said that all important national targets will be included in Act 298 in its future amendment.

“That is an important aspect currently in the pipeline,” said Saifuddin, adding that the study had already commenced last year.

He said the important national targets were security and economic interests covering 13 sectors, including transportation, telecommunications, oil and gas.

Saifuddin said the amendment must have rewarding and punitive elements.

Earlier, in his speech, Saifuddin said the single border agency (SBA) was implemented to ensure an efficient delivery system at border entry points.

“The SBA was also intended to ensure effective coordination at the border and strengthen officers' integrity.

“We hope the decision by the Cabinet is on the right track,” said Saifuddin.

In January this year, Saifuddin said the SBA initiative, planned since 2018, is aimed at integrating more than 20 government enforcement agencies to improve operation flow at Johor’s entry points, especially at the Sultan Ismail Building (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB).

Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the establishment of an SBA to strengthen national defence and security during the tabling of Budget 2024.

Presently, Malaysia’s borders are being guarded by a multi-agency arrangement.
