Kemaman by-election: Terengganu Mentri Besar Samsuri is the Perikatan candidate

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (pic) has been announced as the Perikatan candidate for the Kemaman by-election on Dec 2.

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said that the Ru Rendang state assemblyman and PAS vice president was chosen for his track record of winnability.

"The Kemaman by-election must prove once again that the people's support is rising, as it did in the last general and state elections.

"The candidate of Perikatan, from PAS, was born today on Nov 16 1970. The man is Samsuri," said Tuan Ibrahim.

Samsuri had led Terengganu to be the only state to wipe out the opposition in the last state election.

Perikatan would contest under the banner of PAS in the by-election.

On Nov 13, Barisan Nasional announced that former Armed Forces Chief Jen (R) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor will be its candidate for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election.

The Kemaman by-election was called after the Terengganu Election Court ruled on September 26 that Che Alias Hamid's GE15 victory was nullified.

The petitioner had successfully proven the existence of elements of corruption during the campaign period.

The Election Commission (EC) has set polling day for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election on Dec 2, nomination day on Nov 18, and early voting on Nov 28.

In GE15, Perikatan Nasional's Che Alias won the seat with a majority of 27,179 votes after obtaining 65,714 votes to defeat Barisan's Datuk Seri Ahmad Said (who obtained 38,535 votes), Pakatan Harapan's Hasuni Sudin (8,340 votes) and Pejuang's Rosli Ab. Ghani (506 votes).
