Sunway Lagoon welcomes the festival of lights in grand fashion

Sunway Lagoon’s recent Deepavali celebration was one of the biggest in Malaysia.

Sunway Lagoon was transformed into a luminous wonderland as the theme park ushered in their first-ever Thirunaal Kondattam: Festival Of Lights Celebration.

The two-day extravaganza that took place on Nov 11 and 12, 2023 was one of the biggest Deepavali celebrations in Malaysia.

In response to the need for a significant Deepavali celebration in Malaysia that truly embraced Indian culture, Sunway Lagoon went above and beyond decorations to host grand celebrations dedicated to the traditions and culture of the Indian community during this festival.

The theme park opened its grounds as a community-wide gathering spot for people of different races, cultures, and backgrounds to come together and celebrate Deepavali in its true spirit.

“Deepa Thirunaal Kondattam wasn’t just an event; it was our heartfelt commitment to bring the radiant spirit of Deepavali to life, uniting people from all walks of life to truly experience and appreciate the rich tapestry of Indian culture,” said Calvin Ho, executive director of Sunway Theme Parks.

The event boasted an exciting array of cultural performances including classical Indian and Bhangra dance and music performances.

“These performances were a celebration of tradition and unity, leaving a lasting impression on all who celebrated this festival with us,” added Ho.

One of the highlights of the event was the delightful array of authentic Indian fare – an integral part of Deepavali celebrations.

Visitors had a chance to savour a diverse range of traditional treats, ranging from aromatic curries to crispy dosas and sweet jalebis.

The celebrations were made even more exciting as the theme park opened some of their renowned family-friendly attractions as part of the special day.

Merry-makers found big thrills across ten exhilarating dry rides, ranging from the heart-pounding Lost City Of Gold Scream Coaster to the Night Zoo, flea markets and mesmerising fire performances, making for an unforgettable experience.

“We wanted to ensure that the spirit of a theme park remained alive while preserving the cultural significance of this event as a perfect blend of excitement and tradition for Malaysians,” stressed Ho.
