Woman gets five months jail, fine for stealing gold bar and cash

MELAKA: A 25-year-old woman was sentenced to a total of five months in prison and RM11,000 in fines by the Ayer Keroh Magistrates Court here on Thursday after she pleaded guilty to stealing a gold bar from a goldsmith and cash from her employer.

Goh Min Xiu was charged with stealing a 100-gramme 999 gold bar worth RM25,393 at a goldsmith in Jalan Kee Ann here at 4.30pm last Oct 30.

She was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which is punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment, a fine, or caning, upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, she had entered the goldsmith shop as a customer and asked to see the gold bar.

After it was handed to her, she held onto it for a while before suddenly fleeing the shop and getting into a Nissan Grand Livina car with two other individuals inside.

Goh committed the second offence of stealing RM2,427 in cash from her employer at Restoran Top Hit Ong Thai Mookata BBQ, at 10am last Oct 22.

She was charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code which provides for a sentence of up to seven years imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction.

In her mitigation, Goh, who is a former cashier, said she lived with her elderly mother and that she was remorseful for her actions.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Wardah Ishhar asked for a stiffer sentence as the losses incurred were high.

Magistrate Khairunnisak Hasni then sentenced the accused to three months in prison and a fine of RM10,000, in default two months in prison, for the theft of the gold bar.

For the second offence, she was sentenced to two months in prison, to run consecutively from the first term, and a fine of RM1,000, in default one month in prison. -Bernama
