PAS rep Muhammad Fauzi confirms being chosen as Penang’s opposition leader

GEORGE TOWN: Penang PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff will be the new state opposition leader.

The Sungai Dua assemblyman said while it has not been officially announced by state Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang, he has been chosen as the state opposition leader.

"It is still unofficial as it has not been announced at the state assembly but I have been chosen by Perikatan Nasional to be the opposition leader in Penang.

"The decision was made by the leaders and a letter was sent to the speaker (Law) about a month ago," he said when met outside the august House after the First Session of the 15th Penang Legislative Assembly which proceeded smoothly on Friday (Nov 17).

Asked on issues he would raise as the opposition leader, Muhammad Fauzi said he would highlight feedback from the locals during the state assembly.

"The issues I will raise are based on the people's woes and the development of the state.

"We will be an objective opposition so as to help the people effectively,” he said.

Meanwhile, Penaga assemblyman Mohd Yusni Mat Piah, who was the sole opposition from PAS during the previous term, said with 11 people in the opposition this time, they would implement an effective and efficient check-and-balance in the state government.

“We will form a shadow exco to monitor each of the state exco.

“Of course it is more fun now and we will ‘heat’ up the august House,” he said.

This time around PAS has seven elected representatives in the state legislative assembly, while Bersatu has four.

Perikatan secured 11 of the 40 state seats contested in the state elections in August this year.
