Pet industry has potential for growth in Sabah, says Kitingan

KOTA KINABALU: Pet care, food, and products have great potential to grow in Sabah, says the state's Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industries Minister.

“We need to develop this industry because there is much demand for food, training, grooming and so on,” said Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

He said this at the launch of the first Pet Kingdom Expo at the Sabah International Convention Centre.

In his speech, Kitingan said that studies indicate a growing trend in pet ownership, with Malaysians investing substantially in their pets’ well-being.

He said an estimated two-thirds of Malaysian pet owners spend over RM200 monthly on their pets.

He added that Sabah has an opportunity in the pet industry, and its natural resources make it well-positioned to develop pet food.

Kitingan said that if Sabah worked towards becoming a leading hub for pet food production in the region, it could enhance its market leadership and ensure that Sabahans had access to economical and nutritious options for their pets.

Meanwhile, regarding rabies cases in Sabah, he said there are none.

He said that cases of dog attacks, especially in border areas, will be monitored closely to prevent any cases of rabies in the state.

At the Pet Expo, some 80 exhibitors will showcase their latest products and services to the public. During the three-day event (from Nov 17 to Nov 19), pet competitions, pet shows, adoption drives, and expert seminars will also be held.
