KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector-General of Police's message to police trainee graduates, wanting them to be an honest cop, was timely, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said Tan Sri Razarudin Husain’s address struck a right note as it was very important for such a message to be delivered to graduates as they start fresh in the police force.
"In the fight against corruption, it is important for the message to be delivered to the trainees as anti-corruption culture and service with integrity must be inculcated from the start of their careers.
"The message of integrity also resonates well with the public as they want a police force that will always act professionally and with integrity," he said when contacted on Saturday (Nov 18).
Lee hoped that the police trainees will be able to understand the importance of the IGP's message.
"I also hope they will always bear in mind the concept of honour and integrity and be able to serve well.
"By emphasising on integrity, it will help enhance the image and reputation of the police force and restore public confidence," he added.
Lee said police officers should also improve their communication skills to enhance interaction with the public.
"It is also an advantage to know more than one language.
"Better communication with the public will lead to closer ties and bonds," he said.
The police should aim to provide better services to the people, he said.
"It is integral that the police are seen to provide a service to the country and the people.
"Their role is not just to enforce the law but provide service professionally and with integrity," he said.
It was reported that for the 538 police trainees who graduated, the message from the IGP was clear. Be an honest cop.
“I am reminding all trainees starting their career to always distance themselves from any wrongdoing and corruption.”
