Four arrested for accepting bribes to approve driving licences without mandatory test

KOTA KINABALU: Four enforcement officers were arrested by graft busters for accepting some RM300,000 in return for approving driving licences without the compulsory driving tests.

The suspects, men in their 30s, were detained when they went to provide statements at the Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office at 4pm on Monday (Nov 20).

According to a source, the suspects were believed to have accepted the bribes between 2021 and 2022.

Their modus operandi, the source said, involved the suspects asking between RM400 and RM1,200 from each candidate through middlemen to approve driving licences of various classes without having to go through the required tests.

The source added the group’s illegal actions are believed to have cost the government about RM1.5mil in losses.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy confirmed the case when contacted.

“The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009,” he said, adding the suspects will be produced at the Magistrate’s Court here for a remand order on Tuesday (Nov 21).
