Music selection to be criteria for trishaw licence renewal, says Melaka tourism chairman

MELAKA: Blasting "Dangdut" songs is not helping to boost tourism, says Melaka tourism, heritage, art and culture committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman.

He said there were many complaints from tourists about flashy trishaws playing loud “Dangdut music.

"I urge trishaw riders not to play ‘Dangdut’ so loud that it makes tourists uncomfortable.

"There are many other soothing songs that our riders can play," he told 300 trishaw riders for Visit Melaka Year 2024 at Jalan Kota in Bandar Hilir on Monday (Nov 20).

Abdul Razak said that, following the complaints of tourists, the selection of the right kinds of music would be made as part of the criteria for the renewal of trishaw riders' licences.

He said the state government is ready to provide the riders with pen drives containing suitable songs to be played for tourists.

Meanwhile, Abdul Razak advised the trishaw riders to refrain from overcharging tourists using their services.

He said feedback from tourists indicated that some riders charged exorbitant prices for their services when the state government introduced a standardised fee structure.

"I hope there are no longer complaints on overpriced trishaw rides in the future," he added.
