Motorcyclist in hot water over Mat Rempit 'number plate'

AMPANG: A motorcyclist who cheekily displayed a sticker reading "Mat Rempit" in place of a vehicle number plate was detained by police during a traffic operation in Pandan Indah here.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement personnel were conducting an operation codenamed "Ops Lawlessness" at about 11am on Tuesday (Nov 21) when they detained the local man.

"The rider clearly used a fake plate.

"He along with his motorcycle were brought to the Ampang traffic police station for further action," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Nov 22).

Further investigation found that the rider did not have a valid licence while the motorcycle did not have any vehicle insurance and the road tax had expired, he added.

"We have since issued a compound notice to the rider.

"For having a fake number plate, the case is classified under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000 or between a year and five years imprisonment or both, upon conviction," he added.
