PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has been chosen as one of three representatives from the Asia-Pacific region for the Inaugural Virtual Meeting of the Commonwealth Law Ministers Action Group (LMAG).
"The prestigious appointment placed the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) alongside counterparts from other nations," the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said on Friday (Nov 24).
"It includes Law Ministers from Tanzania, Namibia, Mauritius, Samoa, Bangladesh, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, Malta and Rwanda.
"The meeting via video conference began with an inaugural address from the secretary-general Patricia Scotland and Mauritius Attorney-General, Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Minister Maneesh Gobin chairing the meeting.
"The formation of LMAG was a culmination of decisions made during the Senior Officials of Law Ministers (SOLM) Meeting and Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) held on Nov 22 to 25 last year in Balaclava, Mauritius," the AGC said in a statement on Friday (Nov 24).
The statement said LMAG served as a platform to assess progress and provide guidance on key strategies, action plans and projects pertaining to the rule of law and equal access to justice.
Its areas of focus include promoting member countries' realisation of their Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets, implementing decisions and action plans.
"The plans were adopted by Law Ministers at their biennial meetings and executing decisions endorsed by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their biennial meetings.
"Malaysia takes pride in its role as one of the three representatives from the Asia-Pacific region within LMAG and is committed to actively contributing to the betterment of the Commonwealth, the Asia-Pacific region and most definitely the country itself," the statement added.
