Disaster preparedness enhanced with DGIM platform

PUTRAJAYA: The Defence Geospatial Information Management (DGIM) platform will be deployed to ensure the smooth management of floods during the northeast monsoon, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions) Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

He said the platform could also be accessed by NGOs for humanitarian missions during floods.

“The latest data from various agencies can be used to manage disaster such as improving preparedness and organising disaster response operations.

“It can also be useful in terms of information on assistance for victims and disaster impact value,” he said at a disaster engagement session with the media and National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) at its SMART headquarters in Pulau Meranti yesterday.

The platform was developed by the defence geospatial division of the Department of Survey and Mapping.

Armizan said the disaster dashboard on DGIM was used by the National Disaster Control Centre (NDCC) to beef up preparedness for disaster. He said while the DGIM platform was currently only used at the central level, its usage would be extended to states and districts.

Meanwhile, the number of flood victims in Kuala Nerus district in Terengganu remains the highest in the state, with 1,598 people from 430 families housed at 15 relief centres.

Kuala Terengganu district recorded 956 victims, followed by Marang (732 victims), 272 in Besut and 23 in Dungun.

In Kelantan, the number of flood evacuees remained unchanged with 373 people placed in relief centres in Pasir Puteh and Bachok.
