MELAKA: The state government will feature the uniqueness of the culture and heritage of various ethnicities in Melaka, such as Baba Nyonya and Chetty, to promote Visit Melaka Year 2024 (VMY 2024).
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh (pic) said a particular programme will be held to look into the facets and uniqueness of the Peranakan community in Melaka through several performances in the main programmes of VMY2024 and the exhibition at the cultural museum.
“Like the Baba Nyonya community, they have a unique tradition combining Malay and Chinese influences in daily life, including food, clothing and the Malay language.
“I believe this can be a world attraction to lure tourists to this state, making VMY2024 a success,” he told Bernama after officiating today’s opening ceremony of the 34th Baba Nyonya International Convention.
Ab Rauf said the state government will continue to support and assist all parties involved in empowering art, heritage and culture in Melaka.
He said the organisation of the convention, which was attended by about 500 participants involving Baba Nyonya delegations from five countries, namely Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, was seen as the right step to empower the heritage, culture and tradition so that they are not swallowed up by time.
“It is hoped the cooperation that has already been established among the diaspora will be further developed in other fields, including culture, art, heritage and trade,” he said.
