Johor cops to destroy RM5.4mil worth of seized drugs on completion of legal process

JOHOR BARU: Twenty-two years worth of drugs confiscated by the Johor police, worth RM5.4mil, will be disposed of following the completion of the legal process.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the drugs will be brought to the Kualiti Alam Waste Management Centre in Bukit Pelanduk, Negri Sembilan, to be disposed of using an environmentally-friendly method.

“This year, we have disposed of 322.1kg of drugs and 1,562 litres of liquid drugs worth RM5.4mil, involving 3,214 investigation papers from 2000 to 2022, of which all have completed their court trials.

“Years ago, drugs such as ketum would often be broken up into smaller bits and then disposed of into the ocean, but as we progress, we have found a much more environmentally friendly way of disposing of such items,” he said.

He said this during a press conference at the Johor Police Headquarters, here, on Monday (Nov 27).

The disposed drugs comprise heroin (19.4kg), cannabis (28.3kg), ketamine (15kg), methamphetamine (8kg), methylenedioxy methamphetamine (10kg), ketum (236.4kg), and other various types of drugs weighing 4.4kg, he added.

Comm Kamarul Zaman also said that, last year, the police also destroyed 301.5kg of drugs and 642 litres of liquid drugs worth RM6.1mil.

“This process will continue to be conducted until all of those involved in drug cases are charged in court.

“People often ask what will happen to the drugs that we have confiscated, and this is what we do to them,” he said, adding that a team of police will also be escorting the drugs to the disposal area to ensure that the items are disposed of correctly.

“Some of these cases involved drug syndicates that we have managed to cripple with the help of members of the public who have been sharing with the police quality information regarding drug activities around them,” he added.

Comm Kamarul Zaman added that, from January until Nov 20 this year, the Johor Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) has managed to confiscate 4.6 tonnes of drugs worth RM33.7mil.

“We have also arrested 15,167 people and confiscated RM13.1mil worth of personal belongings,” he added.
