Bukit Gantang Bersatu censures MP for supporting Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu's Bukit Gantang division has slammed Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal for his sudden declaration of support for the Prime Minister.

In a statement on Tuesday (Nov 28), Bukit Gantang Bersatu chief Ahmad Man said the announcement was a betrayal of the people's mandate.

"Bukit Gantang Bersatu strongly opposes Syed Abu Hussin's actions in giving his 'blanket support' to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"As an Opposition MP, Syed Abu Hussin should instead play the role of an agent of checks and balances in this democratic country earnestly.

"The support of an MP for the government must be based on the interests of the people over a particular issue, and not to support the position of the Prime Minister from the government bloc," he said.

Ahmad added that the democratic system would be destroyed if all Opposition MPs gave their full support to the Prime Minister just for added allocations.

He also said Syed Abu Hussin's claim that the decision was for the benefit of the people was "sickening".

"If Syed Abu Hussin is so sure that his support of the Madani government has the blessings of the Bukit Gantang voters, then he should resign the seat and contest again on a Pakatan Harapan or Barisan Nasional ticket.

"If the voters deemed his decision as being to their benefit then surely he would win with a larger margin.

"But it is impossible for him to resign as he knows if he loses, he will have no more bargaining power with the government," he said.

Earlier in Parliament, the Bukit Gantang MP stunned the august House after announcing his support for Anwar.

"I call for Pagoh (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) and Bera (Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob) to come together with Tambun (Anwar) to build a Madani society.

"I, myself, am ready to offer and help the government build the Madani society and help address the rising cost of living," he said, surprising MPs from both sides.

Earlier, he had asked Anwar if he was ready to accept more lawmakers from the Opposition to join hands with him in prioritising the rakyat’s wellbeing.

The statement by Syed Abu Hussin made him the fifth Bersatu lawmaker to pledge support for Anwar.

Previously, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain, Labuan MP Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Jeli MP Zahari Kechik and Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim had expressed their support for the prime minister.
