Bukit Aman to get help to probe bomb threats at schools
JOHOR BARU: Bukit Aman will be working with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Interpol over bomb threats sent via email to six private schools in the state.
State police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat (pic) said to date, no new threats had been received.
“Last week, we received six police reports from six private schools in relation to this matter.
“Investigations have been carried out and the papers handed over to Bukit Aman for the next course of action,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after the handing-over ceremony of certificates to police retirees at Dewan Dato’ Onn at the Johor police headquarters here yesterday.
Comm Kamarul Zaman said investigations showed the schools had received the threats from the same email account. The schools in Permas Jaya, Masai, Gelang Patah, Kulai and Muar had received the email between 11am and 6.18pm on Nov 21.
“After receiving the reports, police teams including the bomb squad and canine unit, were sent to the affected schools to carry out an investigation.
“We searched the school compound but no suspicious objects were found. The locations have been deemed safe,” he said.
On Nov 24, Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the matter was complicated as it involved cyber crime and that Bukit Aman would work closely with the FBI and Interpol.
The cases were being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine or both, upon conviction.
Police are also investigating the cases under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which is punishable up to one year jail, a fine of up to RM50,000 or both, upon conviction.
