GEORGE TOWN: Penang has no plans to introduce a "former chief ministers" enactment with a prescribed code of conduct, the state assembly heard.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said anyone who has served in that position should already be aware of the responsibility of providing full support to the current government democratically elected by the people.
"This includes respecting all decisions, directions and leadership patterns of the current government ... for the benefit of the people and the overall sovereignty of Penang," he said in reply to Lee Khai Loon (PH-Machang Bubok) on Tuesday (Nov 28).
Lee had asked Chow about such an enactment to ensure that a former chief minister's conduct aligned with the state government's objectives.
He also sought clarification on the role of former chief ministers.
Chow said the state government was always open to feedback and criticism from anyone if it was made through proper and official channels.
He said criticism was considered part of the checks and balances that help improve service delivery to the people.
However, any effort to interfere with and influence government decisions should be avoided as it could hinder the government's plans and efforts to help the people of Penang, he added.
