Negri cops nab suspect for stealing from surau donation box

SEREMBAN: Police have arrested a 24-year-old man who allegedly stole from a surau donation box in Sikamat.

Seremban police chief Asst Comm Arifai Tarawe said the suspect was arrested at around 8.30pm Tuesday (Nov 28) at a house in Taman Bayu, Teluk Kemang in Port Dickson.

He said police began probing the case when a 66-year-old man lodged a report on the theft on Saturday (Nov 25).

"Upon checking the CCTV at the surau, we saw a suspect entering at around 3pm on the same day to commit the act.

"He then drove off in a car," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 29).

ACP Arifai said police also seized tools believed to have been used to break open the donation box, as well as a car.

"This morning, we applied for an order to remand the suspect for four days.

"Checks showed the suspect did not have any criminal record," he said.

The case is being probed under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years upon conviction.
