Lorry attendant charged with attempted murder of policeman

TELUK INTAN: A lorry attendant who is believed to be a member of a robbery gang known as the 'Geng Bulat', was charged in the Sessions Court here on Thursday (Nov 30) with attempting to murder a policeman.

Mohamad Hafiz Naharoddin, 28, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Intan Nurul Farena Zainal Abidin.

He was charged with attempting to kill Cpl Nik Mohd Khairul Izwan Nik Jid by driving a Perodua Myvi car dangerously on the road with the intention or knowledge that the act could cause death.

The offence was allegedly committed in front of Masjid Simpang 4 Labu Kubong, Chenderong Balai here at about 5.50pm last Oct 23.

The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment for up to 20 years and can be fined if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Shuh Yuan did not offer bail.

However, lawyer M. Saravanan from the National Legal Aid Foundation, representing Mohamad Hafi, requested for his client to be allowed bail on the grounds that he (Mohamad Hafiz) crashed into the police car by accident.

The lawyer also told the court that his client, who has a child, was shot in the shoulder by the police in the incident.

The court allowed Mohamad Hafiz bail of RM10,000 with one surety and also ordered him to report himself at the nearest police station every month, and set Dec 29 for mention.- Bernama
