Floods: 400 evacuees in Tebrau taken to relief centres


JOHOR BARU: More than 400 people from five villages in the Tebrau sub-district here have been sent to temporary flood relief centres following a flash flood in the area.

According to the Johor Civil Defence Force, two relief centres have been opened as of 10am on Friday (Dec 1).

"The number seeking shelter at the centres has gone up from only 152 people from 54 families at 8am to 463 people from 132 families two hours later.

"The relief centres are at Dewan Muafakat Kampung Cahaya Baru and SK Bukit Mutiara.

"Currently, the flood victims are from five villages, namely Kg Sentosa Damai, Kg Sentosa Barat, Kg Paya Kenangan, Kg Pasir Tebrau and Kg Kangkar Tebrau," it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Tebrau Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Yazid Abdul Rahman said it rescued some 20 flood victims who were trapped in their homes.

"We received a call about the incident at 3.06am and sent nine firemen to the scene.

"Upon arrival, we found that there were 20 people, 10 of them children, trapped in their homes.

"They were rescued and sent to the SK Bukit Mutiara relief centre," he said.
