A PET cat saved the lives of a couple when it woke them up after their house caught fire, Harian Metro reported.
Hana, the cat belonging to Ruhaifi Isyraf Saad, 45, and Siti Aishah Zainul, 41, awoke them in the 4am incident on Sunday in Kuantan.
“I am grateful that Hana woke us up. We have 65 cats which we rescued from the streets, but only Hana sleeps with us in the room as she does not want to be with the other cats,” said Ruhaifi.
Electrical appliances and furniture were destroyed in the blaze at their house in Perumahan Bukit Rangin Perdana Satu.
“The electricity was cut off when there was a short circuit during the fire.
“We tried to douse the blaze with water and wet clothes,” said Ruhaifi.
Siti Aishah said this was not the first time a tragedy had struck.
“In the major floods in 2021, the Veterinary Department took more than seven hours to rescue our cats,” she said, adding that their cats are treated like children.
The couple have been rescuing cats since nine years ago and spend about RM3,000 just on their food, according to Ruhaifi.
“We are now staying with relatives as the electricity has yet to be restored. Only the cats are at home,” said Siti Aishah.

The suspect took about three minutes to rob the store in Jalan Langgar in Alor Setar on Sunday.
Acting Kota Setar police chief Supt Syed Basri Syed Ali said they received a call at 5.10pm reporting a robbery.
“The suspect entered the shop and said ‘hi’ to the female worker before fleeing with 32 gold chains,” he said, adding that the suspect smashed the jewellery display cases with the axe while pointing the gun at the worker.
