Stop sharing pix of 'suspect' while we probe murder claim, Semporna police say

KOTA KINABALU: Police are investigating to determine if a murder really took place in Semporna district as claimed recently.

This comes following the widespread circulation of two photos and several audio clips claiming that the images were of a murder suspect.

The voice messages urge the public to look out for the man in the photos and to report any sightings to the police.

Semporna OCPD Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the claim was being investigated, and urged the public to stop speculating and refrain from sharing unverified information.

He said sharing fake or unverified news was an offence and such actions could disrupt police investigations.

“Those with information should come forward and assist police, not spread unverified news,” he said in a statement on Friday (Dec 8).

Supt Farhan said the spreading of unverified information could cause panic.

He warned people to stop spreading fake news or action would be taken against them under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“Please refer to credible sources for any information to prevent confusion,” he added.
