US veto on UN Resolution violates humanitarian principles, values, say Malaysian NGOs

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States use of its veto power to reject the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between the Zionist regime of Israel and Palestine on Dec 9 is seen as a flagrant violation of all humanitarian principles and values.

The Coalition of Malaysian NGOs, in a statement on Monday (Dec 11), said the US should be held responsible for the bloodshed of Palestinian children, women and elderly people in the besieged Gaza Strip.

"The decision of the US to openly take sides with Israel will lead to continued massive attacks by Israel in Gaza and every occupied territory in Palestine.

"The US is fully responsible for the resolution’s failure impact, which leads to difficulty for peace negotiations and a two-state solution soon,” the statement read.

The coalition further said that the use of the veto power by the US grants Israel direct access to carrying out colonisation and ethnic cleansing openly, disregarding the international community’s call for an immediate cessation of attacks on Gaza.

"The failure of this resolution is feared to contribute to an increase in the death toll of 17,674 people and more than 49,300 individuals suffering injuries as reported by the Palestine News Agency (Wafa) recently,” it added.

In this regard, the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs urged the global community to increase efforts to pressure those involved until a ceasefire in Palestine is successfully implemented.

"With this, the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs fully supports the Malaysian government’s stance in calling on the international community to continuously unite against the aggressive and immoral actions of the US, which violate all principles and universal human values.

"We stand in firm solidarity with the Palestinian people and reiterate our firm commitment in supporting every initiative to fight for their basic rights to obtain permanent independence,” it said.

The coalition comprised 38 NGOs, including the Malaysia Humanitarian Aid and Relief (Mahar), Global Peace Mission Malaysia, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) and Haluan Malaysia. – Bernama
