Former Bernama editor-in-chief Yong Soo Heong elected as Malaysian Press Institute president

KUALA LUMPUR: Former editor-in-chief of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Datuk Yong Soo Heong(pic) has been elected as the president of the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI).

MPI, in a statement on Thursday (Dec 14), said that Yong, who is currently the editor-in-chief of The Weekly Echo, was elected to the position through the selection of three key positions by the MPI board of directors at the extraordinary general meeting held in Cyberjaya today.

In addition, New Straits Times group editor Farrah Naz Karim was elected as deputy president while Star Media Group managing editor Brian Martin was named vice-president.

According to MPI, the term of service of the administrative council comprising six members including Yong, Farah Naz and Brian, is effective until the next general meeting, slated to take place before the middle of next year.

Commenting on his appointment, Yong, in the same statement, said MPI needs to be more inclusive and relevant to the media industry by holding more training programmes, in line with the evolving media landscape.

"These training programmes aim to help produce more journalists of high standards and capabilities to help raise the standard of journalism in the country,” he said.

He said MPI will invite more media organisations to join as members and encouraging the involvement of all parties. – Bernama
