‘Using chicken manure as fertiliser not encouraged’

BAGAN SERAI: The use of chicken manure as fertiliser is not encouraged by the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry although there are no legal provisions against it.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said such fertiliser causes discomfort due to its foul smell and has the potential to cause burns if it comes into contact with plants, reported Bernama.

“The use of chicken manure can also spread disease to humans,” he said after closing the Entrepreneurship and Curriculum Day at Maahad Al-Ehya Assharif Gunung Semanggol here on Tuesday night.

He said this in response to complaints by food stall traders in Parit Haji Aman and Parit Haji Tahir here over housefly infestation and foul smells due to the use of chicken manure at a vegetable farm in the area.

Mohamad said a complaint could be lodged with the local authority for further action regarding the matter, where an investigation could be conducted under Section 2 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171).

Meanwhile, he said the agricultural activities in the area, allegedly by the Rohingya community, is on reserved land under the Drainage and Irrigation Department.
