A young man’s fishing trip in Sungai Siput, Perak, turned into a near death encounter when he came face-to-face with a tiger, reported Berita Harian.
Muhammad Luqman Haqim Muhamad Ghazali Lim, 22, said that he met the apex predator while fishing at a pond next to an oil palm plantation near his house at around 1.40pm on Wednesday.
Fortunately for Muhammad Luqman, he managed to escape the big cat through a combination of quick thinking, staying calm and a stroke of good luck.
“As I was waiting for my friend to join me, I smelled the presence of a goat but I didn’t think much of it until I suddenly locked eyes with a tiger that appeared really close to me.
“The tiger was roaring while staring straight at me which almost made my heart stop. I started reciting some prayers while stepping back slowly to about 10m before sprinting to a nearby temple for help,” he said.
Temple staff initially didn’t believe his story until they too heard a loud roar followed by the howls of several monkeys around the temple. Muhammad Luqman and the staff members panicked and fled the area.
A team from the Sungai Siput Fire and Rescue Department has since been deployed to the scene to help monitor the area for the tiger.
Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Yusoff Shariff also said that the agency is also investigating the sighting.
