Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz elected new Bersih chairman


PETALING JAYA: Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz has been elected as the new Coalition for Clean & Fair Election (Bersih) chairman for the 2023-2025 term.

According to Bersih's election committee, Muhammad Faisal polled 23 votes, while his competitor, Gopalan K. Papachan, received 22 votes.

"The vote turnout was 74%. Ballot papers were opened and votes were counted immediately after the conclusion of the polling process at 5pm on Dec 15, 2023, at the Bersih office," the committee said in a statement on Friday (Dec 15).

It said that the polling process was conducted online and saw the receipt of 45 ballot papers from the 61 NGOs that form the Bersih coalition.

There were five observers present for the process, which was live-streamed to other endorsing NGOs.

Muhammad Faisal was the former president of the Muslim Youth Movement Malaysia (Abim) from 2019 to 2023 and deputy chairperson of Bersih from 2018 to 2020.

Thomas Fann, the former Bersih chairman, tendered his resignation on Nov 19.
