Keningau cops detain teenager, seize homemade firearms

The items seized from the suspect.

KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested a young man after he was found with two bakakuks, or homemade shotguns and an air rifle in Sabah’s interior Keningau district.

The 19-year-old was driving when police stopped him near a plantation in Nabawan at about 11.30am on Wednesday (Dec 13).

Keningau police chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said the raid was conducted by a team from the state police contingent headquarters and Keningau after a public tip-off.

He added that along with the illegal firearms, police personnel also seized nine live bullets and a box of air rifle ammunition.

“All the firearms and ammunition were found in the suspect’s car,” he said, when contacted on Saturday (Dec 16).

According to Supt Yampil, the suspect had admitted to owning and using the weapons since 2019.

“The suspect has been released under police bail but Investigations are on-going under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960,” he said.

The law provides for a prison sentence of not more than seven years, a fine that is not more than RM10,000 or both upon conviction.
