Urban poor a big focus for new FT minister

PUTRAJAYA: Tackling urban poverty will be among several areas that will be the key focus for Dr Zaliha Mustafa as she helms administration of the Federal Territories.

The newly-appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said she would carry out Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s mission and vision to see urban poverty eradicated.

“I am confident this can be done with the help and teamwork from staff at the Federal Territories Department,” she told the media before clocking in for her first day at work at Menara Seri Wilayah here yesterday.

Dr Zaliha said other issues to be given priority were the development of Labuan as a tourism hub and the redevelopment of Kampung Baru.

The management of hawkers and small traders in Kuala Lumpur would also be given attention, she added.

Dr Zaliha, 59, who is Sekijang MP, previously served as the health minister before being given the new portfolio following a recent Cabinet reshuffle.
