Woman detained for drug offences in Langkawi dies while receiving treatment


KUALA LUMPUR: A 34-year-old woman who was detained for drug related offences died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Langkawi.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Seri Azry Ahmad said the woman was detained in Langkawi under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on Dec 12.

"She was held under remand at the Kuah police station's lockup. However, she complained that she wasfeeling unwell at about 8.05pm on Dec 15 and she was subsequently brought to Hospital Sultanah Maliha, Langkawi, for treatment," he said in a statement on Saturday (Dec 16).

He added that the detainee died at the hospital at about 7.30am on Saturday.

"The post-mortem will be conducted at Hospital Bahiyah in Alor Setar on Sunday (Dec 17) to discover the cause of death. JIPS' Criminal and Custodial Death Unit (USJKT) will conduct the investigation," he said.
