One killed, another injured after van crashes into tree in Penampang

KOTA KINABALU: The 35-year-old driver of a van was killed while a passenger was injured after their vehicle crashed into trees along the old Papar road in Penampang near here.

He is said to have lost control of the vehicle before crashing and ramming into a dense bushy area at around 5pm, Saturday (Dec 16).

Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said the passenger is an 18-year-old boy and added that they had received an emergency call at around 5.11pm and had sent out a team to respond.

He said both victims were taken out of the wrecked van after rescuers arrived.

“The driver was pronounced dead at the scene while the teenager was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment,” said Supt Sammy.

He said this case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987 and advised the public to refrain from sharing misleading information or photos of the crash to respect the sensitivities of the families affected.
