Senior cop charged with murder over fatal accident involving teen


IPOH: A 44-year-old senior police officer, who allegedly crashed his car into a motorcycle, killing a Form Five student at Taman Jati, has been charged with murder.

Deputy Supt Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak was read the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code before Magistrate S. Punitha.

DSP Mohd Nazri entered the courtroom at 9am with a piece of cloth covering his head.

No plea was recorded.

According the charge sheet, the accused had allegedly committed the offence against Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, 17, between 12:05pm and 12.40pm at Jalan Taman Jati 1, near SMK Jati on Dec 15.

Deputy Public Prosecutor was led by Azlina Rasdi, Khairul Azreem Mamat, Wan Azimah Yaacob, Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, Saiful Akmal Mod Said, Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, Geetha AP Jora Singh and Low Qin Hui.

The accused was represented by Loi Yap Loong.

No bail was offered and Magistrate S Punitha fixed case mention on Feb 7, 2024.

DSP Mohd Nazri was arrested on Friday (Dec 15) and had been ordered to be remanded until Monday to facilitate investigations.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri had said that the suspect had tested negative for drugs.

According to the post-mortem report, Muhammad Zaharif died due to chest and abdominal injuries.

On Sunday, Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh said in a press statement that there was sufficient evidence to charge the police officer with murder.
