JOHOR BARU: Eighty critical slopes that could cause landslides have been identified throughout Johor, with many located along federal and state roads, says Johor exco Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.
Of that total, 21 slopes along federal and state roads have been repaired and strengthened between January to June this year, involving RM22.6mil.
The repaired slopes are on federal roads in Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Segamat, Kluang, Batu Pahat and Johor Baru, he said.
“The slopes on state roads that have been repaired are in Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Kulai and Tangkak,” he told The Star.
“We have managed to fix 21 slopes this year with a total allocation of RM22.6mil.
“We have requested funds for repairs on the remaining 59 in next year’s budget,” he added.
Climate Change and State Disaster Management Select Committee chairman Anuar Abd Manap said that the state government has applied for funds to repair 32 critical slopes, of which 24 are on federal roads while the rest are along state roads.
Anuar added that as of Dec 18, only one road has been closed due to a landslide, namely J95, Jalan Lingkaran Kahang Darat (Section 8) in Kluang.
“We are currently improving the conditions of three critical slopes near the Temenggong Ibrahim Teachers Training Institute Campus in Johor Baru, Kluang Syariah Court and Mersing Meteorological Department office.“Some of the temporary solutions are covering the slopes with canvas and placing the Traffic Management Plan on roads that were closed due to landslides.”
Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said that a total of six landslide incidents were recorded during the monsoon season earlier this year.
