Covid-19: Prevalent Omicron variant mainly causes mild symptoms, says Health Ministry


KUALA LUMPUR: The Omicron variant that currently makes up most Covid-19 infections in the country mostly causes mild symptoms only, according to Health Ministry public health medicine specialist Dr Tan Seok Hong.

She said the number of Covid-19 cases are expected to decrease within a month based on the Health Ministry's observations of virus infection trends.

"Although cases may rise again soon, it will decrease in four to six weeks," she said when appearing as a guest on Bernama Radio's Jendela Fikir programme on Wednesday (Dec 20)

on the topic Covid-19: Protect High Risk Groups.

Nevertheless, Dr Tan advised the public to take precautionary measures during the school holiday season.

She said individuals who test positive for Covid-19 and are in self-quarantine need not be isolated for more than five days even if subsequent test results are positive.

"The Health Ministry will release guidelines soon about the third booster dose," she said, adding that until then, the public are urged to adhere to existing procedures. – Bernama
