Gansu, Qinghai earthquake: No Malaysians affected so far, says Wisma Putra

PETALING JAYA: No Malaysians have been reported to be involved or affected by the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck China's north-west Gansu and Qinhai provinces at 11.59pm on Dec 18, says Wisma Putra.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement Tuesday (Dec 19) night, said that more than 110 fatalities and 397 casualties were reported thus far, according to local authorities.

"Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and families affected by the earthquake, as well as to the people and government of the People's Republic of China," it said in the statement.

Wisma Putra added that it was monitoring developments closely, through the Consulate-General of Malaysia in Xi'an and, at the time the statement was issued, no Malaysians had been reported to involved or affected by the earthquake.

"Malaysians in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow the latest updates and advice issue by local authorities," the Foreign Ministry added.

It also advised Malaysians present in the areas affected and in need of consular assistance to reach out to the Consulate-General in Xi'an via telephone or fax at +8629-8965 8478 or +86 186 2968 1928 (after working hours). They can also email mwxian@kln.gov.my.
