MMEA rescues six tourists in stormy seas off Mersing

Six tourists who were caught in a monsoon storm at sea near here have been rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Dec 21, 2023.

MERSING: Six tourists caught in a storm at sea near here have been rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Mersing MMEA director Maritime Cmdr Suhaizan Saadin said the incident near Pulau Rawa here occurred at 7.45am on Thursday (Dec 21).

“Our patrol unit was on routine rounds in the area and received a call for help from the resort operator on the island.

“The unit rushed to the location to help the tourists," he said in a statement.

Two of the tourists were from France, two from Singapore and the other two locals.

“During the rescue, it rained heavily and the waves were choppy but we managed to send them to the Syahbandar public jetty here at around 9.45am. They were safe and unhurt,” he said.

Suhaizan added that the tourists, four men and two women, were aged 35 to 60.

He reminded the maritime community and tourists to be wary of the north-east monsoon period, expected to last until Dec 31.

“During this time, all seaside and maritime activities are extremely dangerous,” he said, advising the public to call MERS 999 or the Johor maritime operations centre hotline at 07-219 9404 for assistance.
