JOHOR BARU: The government will ensure that there will be enough sugar supply in the country following MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd’s plans to export premium white sugar Gula Super to Singapore next year.
Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said that the government only controls coarse and refined white sugar and not premium white sugar.
“I believe that this matter is best answered by the Ministry because any decision (to export goods) is done at their level.
“At the same time, I believed that the government would always prioritise the welfare of the people, especially when it comes to protecting the needs and necessities of our consumers.
"Plus, the company is only exporting premium white sugar and not coarse and refined white sugar, so I don’t think there will be any issues with sugar supply in Johor,” she said.
She said this when met by reporters after launching the Festive Season Maximum Price Control Scheme at Jaya Grocer Austin Heights, here, on Saturday (Dec 23).
Lilis said this when asked to comment on MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd plans to export premium white sugar to Singapore next year.
The current price of refined white sugar controlled by the government is RM2.85 per kilogramme (coarse) and RM2.95 per kg (refined), set under the Supply Control Act 1961.
Gula Super’s price is at a recommended retail price of RM4.60 for a 1kg pack.
On Dec 6, MSM group chief executive officer Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad was reported as saying that MSM is targeting Singapore due to the close proximity between its factory in Johor.
