Hunt for fake awards ring

KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters are tracking down the victims of a syndicate that was recently busted for selling fake federal awards with the titles of Tan Sri, Datuk Seri, and Datuk.

Sources said efforts by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to track down the victims has been ongoing since the syndicate was busted early this month.

It is learnt that the victims had been duped by a man who had been holding a major post in a non-governmental group.

“The suspect was investigated by the MACC recently but the enforcement agency needs other victims to come forward to assist with the investigation,” said the sources.

MACC Investigation Division senior director Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim said so far, seven victims had been identified, with five having had their statements recorded.

“We believe there are still several victims who need to come forward to help complete the investigation,” he said.

Those with information are urged to contact investigating officer Muhammad Aiman Jamil at 03-8870 0473 or 017-282 0484.

Earlier this month, an NGO president and five others were nabbed for selling fake federal awards.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation said the president was suspected to have played a key role in the syndicate. He also determined the price charged for those interested in getting an award.

It is learnt that the syndicate, which had been in operation since 2020, conned six individuals who wished to get awards without going through the normal procedures.

The offers made by the syndicate were RM2mil for a Tan Sri title, RM150,000 for a Datukship, and RM250,000 for a Datuk Seri.
