Perlis aims to cut down on water wastage before reviewing rates

KANGAR: The Perlis government is intensifying efforts to reduce the percentage of non-revenue water (NRW) in the state from over 60% currently to 50% by next year.

Perlis infrastructure and public transport committee chairman Izizam Ibrahim said besides addressing wastage, the initiative would ensure a consistent water supply for people in the state.

He said at present, the state government would not consider any increase in water tariffs, adding that no application had been made to the National Water Services Commission for the coming year.

“There have been discussions about the increase in water tariffs at the state government level.

“But next year, we will not focus on raising the water tariff yet. I want to solve the water problem in Perlis because our NRW rate is 60% and above.

“There are still areas without good water pressure, so I want to first focus on this problem – supplying water to the people. Then, we will assess the possibility of increasing the water tariff,” he told Bernama yesterday.

Currently, the water tariff rate for domestic users in Perlis stands at 40sen for one to 14 cubic metres, 70sen for 15 to 40 cubic metres, and RM1.10 for 40 cubic metres and above.

The tariff structure has been in place since 1996.
