KOTA KINABALU: Police seized a home-made rifle and 10 bullets after intercepting a vehicle driven by a local villager along the Kawang stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway in Papar, about 40km from here.
Papar district police chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the driver of the car, a 41-year-old man, was arrested for further investigations.
He said a policeman in a patrol car spotted the suspect driving in a suspicious manner, and decided to intercept the vehicle at Kampung Tanaki, Kawang, at about 1.30pm on Friday.
He said there were two people inside the vehicle and that one of the suspects who was sitting in the passenger seat fled the scene upon seeing the police.
“Police found a bag placed under the front passenger seat containing 10 shotgun shells, and upon further inspection, a home-made rifle was found in the car’s boot,” he said yesterday.
He said an investigation was being carried out under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960.

In an unrelated arrest, Penampang district police arrested two suspects for possession of about 0.15g of methamphetamine (syabu) at a roadblock near Kampung Tanaki.
The two duo, aged 38 and 39, were nabbed during a routine traffic operation under Ops Utama, Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said.
He added that the duo were arrested after they acted aggressively and attempted to run away when approached by police.
“We found the suspected syabu in packets in the pockets of the two suspects,” he said, adding that police also recovered equipment used to consume drugs, while both suspects tested positive for drug use.
