‘Sugar exports to Singapore won’t affect Johor supply’

JOHOR BARU: The Johor branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) will ensure no disruption in the state’s sugar supply following MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd’s upcoming export of premium white sugar to Singapore next year.

Its director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo expressed confidence that there would be no supply issues as the government, through KPDN, consistently prioritises the people’s needs.

“KPDN is committed to safeguarding the interests and needs of the local population and we will ensure that the sugar export will not lead to any disruptions in the supply chain within Johor,” she told reporters when met at Austin Heights, here yesterday.

MSM group chief executive officer Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad recently announced plans to export its newly-launched premium white sugar product, Gula Super, to neighbouring countries starting next year.

Lilis Saslinda also confirmed that the government only controls prices of coarse and refined white sugar, and not premium white sugar.

In another matter, she said more than RM7.2mil worth of goods and items had been confiscated in their enforcement operations in Johor this year.

Lilis Saslinda said this involved 1,277 cases for various offences, with more than RM1mil in compound notices issued from January this year until yesterday.

“Besides organising Jualan Rahmah, our enforcement unit has also been actively conducting operations and surveillance at supermarkets, wet markets and sundry stores in the state.

“About 90% of the cases we recorded are based on our own data and surveillance, and the remaining 10% comes from public information.

“We also conducted 1,136 inspections at all supermarkets, factories, wholesalers and even mini markets from January until yesterday.

“We have recorded 57 cases and issued a compound worth RM6,700 for offences under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” she added.
