KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a danger-level continuous rain warning for several areas in Kelantan and Terengganu until today.

MetMalaysia said the areas affected in Kelantan are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai.

The affected areas in Terengganu are Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun, it said in a statement yesterday.

In Kelantan, the number of evacuees rose to 856 from 235 families as of 9am yesterday, up from 778 (215 families) overnight.

The Kelantan state disaster management secretariat said Jeli and Tanah Merah districts were the latest to be struck by floods after Pasir Mas.

In Jeli, the evacuees were being housed at SK Jeli 1, SK Legeh and SK Kuala Balah; SK Gual To’Deh and SK Gual Periok in Pasir Masir; and SK Legeh in Tanah Merah.

The levels of two rivers in Kelantan breached the danger point as of 9am yesterday following heavy rain since Saturday.

The publicinfobanjir.water. gov.my portal reported that the level of Sungai Aring at Jalan Felda Aring, Gua Musang, was 80.31m, exceeding the danger level of 72m.

Continuous rain since Saturday also caused water from Sungai Brooke to burst its banks and overflow to Jalan Lojing-Pos Blau-Kuala Betis at Pos Blau here, resulting in the road being closed to all vehicles since 8am yesterday.

About 100 cars were stranded in the area at about noon following the road closure.

The exit road to Felda Aring, as well as to Ciku 7 and Ciku 8, was also closed to all vehicles.

In Terengganu, the third wave of floods had forced the evacuation of 340 people from 91 families as of 10am yesterday, as compared with 102 people from 25 families earlier in the morning.

The Terengganu district disaster management secretariat said they were being housed at six relief centres in three districts, namely Dungun, Setiu and Marang.

In Dungun, 303 evacuees from 84 families were being accommodated at SK Pusat, Kampung Shukor Multipurpose Hall, Bembam Hall and Pasir Raja Community Hall.

In Marang, 12 evacuees from three families were sheltered at Wakaf Tapai Civic Hall, while 25 people from four families were housed at Kampung Seladang Hall in Setiu.

The publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my portal reported that the water levels of four rivers in Terengganu had exceeded the danger point.
