JOHOR BARU: It was a frenzy of last-minute festive preparations while some families chose to squeeze in some sight-seeing during their Christmas break.

Pasar Borneo Trader Association president Josephine Jimbai, 50, said she has spent around RM4,000 since last week to prepare for her Christmas trip to Melaka.

“I am taking about 30 of our members to holiday in Melaka because it has been our annual tradition to gather with friends and families who are unable to return home to Sarawak for Christmas.

“I bought some marinated chicken and fish, and cakes for our feast on Christmas morning,” she said, adding that she spent another RM1,000 on gifts.

Josephine said Melaka was their destination of choice because some were driving down from Kuala Lumpur, so they decided to meet halfway.

Tour guide Shukri Mansor, 50, was seen snapping photos with a group of tourists from Kedah at the giant crown at the entrance of Istana Bukit Serene here.

“I brought 42 tourists from Alor Setar by bus to the spot for photo opportunities as part of our visit to several parts of the country.

“We will be spending two days in Johor Baru where we plan to enjoy delicious local food such as laksa Johor and kacang pool (an Arab-inspired dish),” he said.

Shukri also said he reminded his group to keep their face masks on throughout the trip as there were large crowds everywhere.

Singaporean Edin Chia, 40, said she took her two children to Legoland Malaysia for a day of fun in the sun after completing their Christmas shopping on Saturday.

“We entered Johor Baru on Friday evening to look for some last-minute deals and promised our children that we will bring them to the theme park,” said the corporate executive.

Chia said they would be celebrating Christmas with their loved ones back in Singapore today.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old Luciana Melayu said she spent about RM2,000 on groceries and decorations this year, which was double what she had spent last Christmas.

“Last year, I spent around RM700 on food and daily necessities, including fish, meat and chicken for the festive season.

“This year was quite tough as prices of goods have gone up,” said the nurse, adding that she was also unable to return to Sarawak due to the expensive flight tickets.
