Flood victim diligently carries out duty to guard relief centre

KUALA KRAI: A security guard whose duty is to ensure the safety of flood victims housed at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Keroh temporary relief centre diligently carries out his duty even though his house is among those affected.

Azmi Muhd, 40, who lives with his 63-year-old mother and siblings in Kampung Keroh relocated to the relief centre on Monday (Dec 25) evening.

"The heavy rain yesterday made me feel uneasy while working because I was worried about my family’s safety. At the same time, several flood victims have started checking into the relief centre,” he told Bernama on Tuesday (Dec 26).

Azmi said a colleague helped cover for him when he went home to evacuate his family and bring them to the relief centre.

"I feel honoured for being able to serve the flood victims. This is a valuable experience for me since I started working as a security guard here in 2015,” he said, adding the experience became more meaningful when the flood victims expressed their gratitude towards him for protecting their safety at the relief centre.

According to the Kelantan Disaster Management Committee secretariat, 32 temporary relief centres were opened as of 2pm on Tuesday, involving 3,308 flood victims from 903 families.- Bernama
