Cops probe case of the ‘disappearing’ wedding caterer

SEREMBAN: A family ended up having to prepare food for guests of a wedding after the caterer they engaged bailed out at the last-minute.

The newly-weds’ brother, Burhanuddin Rabbani Abdul Shukor, 31, posted about the incident on Facebook, stating that the caterer was supposed to prepare food for 1,000 guests as well as the wedding dais.

Due to the caterer’s no-show, the family lost RM13,000 even though the wedding went ahead at Serting Junior Science College Hall.

“Just to let everyone know, we have been conned. The caterer we hired didn’t show up. We called repeatedly but there was no response.

“So, we ended up cooking ourselves. We only could prepare food for around 400 pax ... just simple fare of curry chicken, sambal belacan, fruits and fresh vegetables,” he posted, adding that they lodged a police report at the Bandar Seri Jempol police station the night before the wedding.

Burhanuddin also said they were thinking of taking their case to the Malaysian consumer claims tribunal or to refer the case to lawyers, Bernama reported.

Yesterday, Jempol district police chief Supt Hoo Chang Hook confirmed the matter when contacted.

He said police would obtain more information from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) here.

He added that police had traced the bank account number and obtained information about the account owner through the Commercial Crime Intelligence System (CCIS) portal and telcos they used.

“We will refer to the CCM for the details of the business owner and account number.

“The victim, who is also the bride, said she never met the wedding planner from Shah Alam, Selangor, face to face and all transactions were conducted online.

“Based on preliminary investigations, the 26-year-old woman dealt with the company on April 3 on Facebook before making three payments online totalling RM13,200 for the wedding, which was held two days ago,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Supt Hoo said the woman did not receive the promised package and lodged a police report before the wedding ceremony.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

On Monday, the media reported that a family claimed to have lost over RM13,000 after being deceived by a wedding planner for a wedding package, resulting in them having to cook meals on their own for the wedding feast.
